Perfect Rainy Day for Kids:
A #ParentingNerd Arts & Crafts Activity
My kids and I love the rain. We welcome the coolness it brings after the long hot summer. We love the sound it makes as it makes drum beats on our rooftop. And we love the after smell of the rain on the crisp grass. Somehow, rain brings warmth despite the physical coolness.
To introduce rain to my 3 year old, I let him hear one of my favorite "happy" songs, "Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head." He loved it! He was able to sing through most parts of the song after a few playbacks. The lyrics are light, melody beautiful and happy, plus it's a good way to introduce our kids to adult music. (Here's the link http://youtu.be/OT1HCQcSHW0 to the endearing video of the song.)
And as a #ParentingNerd, I had to level up our experience a bit and go beyond the music. We made rain clouds inspired by Activity Corner. (link) Wait, what? #ParentingNerd? You read it right, it’s a site dedicated to kid-obsessed, nerdy parents like us! And yay! TheGoMom was chosen to be one of the contributors to CERELAC & GERBER's #ParentingNerd blog. This cute, yet very easy rain cloud would be my first contribution :-)
To make your rain cloud, you would need the following:
Glue; any cardboard/carton/used folder to cut out as cloud; blue colored plastic (you can use sandwich bag or freezer bags) cut out in strips, tape, and cotton balls. If your kid can already cut, have him cut the plastic strips.
Procedure:
- Have your child squeeze out glue all over the cloud cutout.
- Have your child put the cotton balls on the cloud cutout. Make sure to separate the cotton balls so he doesn't put the whole clump.
- Once cloud is filled with cotton balls, let him have fun and pat the cotton balls to make sure they are attached firmly.
- Turn cutout over and have him stick the plastic strips on the lower edge of the cloud. I prepared hanging tape on the edge of the plastic so he just sticks it.
I did it mom! My little man Tate proud of his work! |
We played a little bit more by putting the cloud on top of his head while singing "Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head."
